Although, categorically not an original ‘Knobbly’ Lister-Jaguar, SXK 368 is an extremely faithful recreation. Similar in ethos to the Cameron Millar Maserati 250Fs or the more recently replicated Guido Rosani / Jim Stokes Lancia-Ferrari D50s, it was one of three such cars built in the mid 1980s by New Zealander Ray Larsen. Copied directly from a genuine ‘Knobbly’ using a host of period Jaguar components where appropriate, the vendor is confident that SXK 368 would prove eligible for an FIA issued Historical Technical Passport as he believes that it (to use the FIA’s own phraseology) “conforms in all respects with the specification of the type of car it purports to be”. As such, its two main tubular longitudinal chassis members taper fore and aft from an unusually wide point level with the driver’s seat which enables him / her to sit right down inside the frame. The front suspension, carried on a dedicated box structure, consists of equal length double wishbones (fabricated from tubular steel with reinforcing flange plates) tempered by coil-over damper units, while the rear set-up comprises a De Dion tube located by parallel radius arms and a sliding trunnion. Special ducting keeps each of the four-wheel disc brakes (inboard at the rear) cool. An important consideration given that the 3.8 litre engine carries a bespoke inlet manifold complete with water rail, pressure gauge and triple 45 DCOE Weber carburettors. Canted over by eight degrees, the unit also employs a D-type style dry-sump lubrication system and gas flowed 36” exhaust system with full breather kit. Mated to a D-type style bellhousing with backward facing starter motor and small circumference clutch, it feeds its considerable power to a Salisbury differential via an E-type close ratio gearbox (JSCR1990) that is topped by an XK short lid.
Finished in the Lister works livery of green with a yellow centre stripe, SXK 368 is described by the vendor as being in very good overall condition. Recently recommissioned following a period of dry storage, its chassis and fuel systems (twin pumps / filters) have been thoroughly checked over. Riding on Dunlop style centre peg drive wheels, it is offered for sale with V5 registration document, MOT current until December 2005 and historic class (free) road tax. Prospective purchasers should note that as per an original ‘Knobbly’ SXK 368 is not fitted with a handbrake. Priced at less than a third of the ‘real’ thing, this glorious recreation will be displayed at the NEC with its front and rear body sections detached so that the accuracy of its innards may be better appreciated.
