It is suggested that the 1947-manufactured and really good looking MkIV 1.7-litre sports saloon being auctioned here today may well have taken part in the 1947 Monte Carlo Rally, although this has yet to be substantiated. An old style 1968 green logbook is in the history file, together with sundry old MOTs and former bills of sale. The bodywork, two-tone blue paintwork and interior in red are all reportedly in excellent condition, and we understand that the tyres have been renewed recently.

The Interior

Restored interior

Sunroof and opening windscreen

Heater

Finished in striking red leather and blue carpets, the interior of this Jaguar is a luxurious place to be. It has many features which mark it out as a high-class automobile of its day, such as a sunroof, heater and wind out windscreen.

Being an older restoration, it appears to be well used, with that unmistakable warm glow of use being emitted from the leather. The ‘sunburst’ stitching on the leather door cards remains in particularly fine condition and is a very nice finishing touch.

The carpets appear to be in a generally presentable state, with the rear passenger footwells looking a little threadbare. The headlining is showing some staining around the rear windscreen.

In front of the driver, the dashboard is fitted with a full complement of gauges and switches which, with the exception of the odometer, are all said to be working. The wood of the dashboard appears to be in good condition but the matching wooden door cappings could benefit from some renewed polish.

To the rear, the boot appears clean and tidy. The original tool tray is present in the boot lid, with its cut-out spaces for individual tools, but sadly some of the tools are now missing. The next owner will be able to enjoy sourcing an appropriate collection of period-correct items.

The Exterior

Extensive body restoration in 1990 by Downton Bodyworks

Original trafficators still function

Colour matched wheels

The dark/light blue colour combination suit this Jaguar perfectly. And along with the colour matched wheels and whitewall tyres, the car looks smart and refined. Rear-hinged doors complete the look perfectly.

An invoice on file shows that the body was subject to a restoration carried out in 1990 by Downton Bodyworks, while the car was still in the UK. This work was referred to as a ‘total body restoration’.

This car benefits from the fitment of flashing indicators to supplement the original trafficators, for safety in modern traffic. And underneath the car appears to be in good condition, with no more than the usual amount of minor surface corrosion in places. The tyres would benefit from being replaced with a new set, while the chrome appears to be generally good.

The Mechanics

Engine work carried out in 1992

Cylinder head gasket replaced

Every 75 year old vehicle will need a mechanical overhaul once in a while, so it is reassuring to have an invoice on file detailing the mechanical work carried out on this car in 1992. Howard Wilson ‘specialist in veteran and vintage restoration’ rebuilt the engine including fitting new piston rings and con rods, as well as cleaning the sump and oil pump and servicing or renewing most of the engine’s ancillary components.

More recently the car’s cylinder head gasket has been replaced, with photographs on file to show the condition of the pistons and bores.

The vendor states that this MK IV is running well, without any unusual noises, smoke or leaks. It is said to accelerate strongly, change gear and brake as it should do.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
