Car to be at auction 6/09

Auction description:
Lot No: 279
1962 Jaguar MK II Saloon
Chassis no. 219420
Engine no. LB8654-9
The offered 1962 Mark II Saloon is a LHD model equipped with the desirable four-speed overdrive manual transmission. Its 1962 U.S. port-of-entry price was around $4,700—a new Buick Electra 225 cost about the same.

The current owners purchased the Mark II in 1995. They have performed most of the restoration work, seeking assistance only when lacking appropriate equipment or expertise. In 2003, the body was repaired with new metal as required and a respray in duPont basecoat-clearcoat was carried out. Connolly hides were used to retrim the blue interior. A complete engine rebuild took place in 2004. All renewable suspension components have been replaced and the four-wheel disc brake system rebuilt. Cooling, fuel and electrical systems have been attended to as needed. The clutch assembly and flywheel were replaced with new parts.

The vendor represents the Mark II to be a very clean and solid car, driven frequently during his 14 years of ownership. It has received People's Choice awards at numerous shows.

The Jaguar Mark II is titled to the vendor by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Estimate: $30,000 - 40,000

This 1962 Jaguar Mk II was refurbished in Opalescent Silver Blue over blue Connolly leather between 1997-2004 by its previous owner in Massachusetts. Power is from a 3.8-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission and Laycock overdrive unit. The seller acquired the car in 2010, and has since driven it 6k miles as well as installing a new head gasket, braking parts, ignition components, new tires, a Moto-lita steering wheel, a PerTronix ignition module, a stainless exhaust system, and more. This Mk II is offered with a period Brooks Brothers picnic set, refinished steel wheels and hubcaps, removed stock parts, owner’s books, records from 1994-present, and a Connecticut bill of sale.

The body was refinished in Opalescent Silver Blue in approximately 2004, reportedly following replacement of rusted rocker panels. The bumpers and overriders are said to have been re-plated, with the balance of the brightwork showing evidence of its age. Close-up photos show chips at the edges of the hood and wheel arches as well as bubbles in the left rear door. UK-spec fog lamps are present but not wired, and US-spec grilles and a UK spec headlight switch to convert the currently-installed Fograngers to operational are included.

New rain channel trim strips and body seals have been fitted along with a badge bar and a reproduction “Dan Gurney for President” bumper sticker. The turn signals are operational but do not self-cancel according to the seller. Chrome five-lug wire wheels were mounted with new Vredestein Sprint Classic tires in 2015. Brake and suspension work in 2014 included replacement of the front subframe mounts, repacking the wheel bearings, new brake rotors, and a rebuild of the right rear caliper.

The cabin was refurbished circa 1997 with Connolly seat covers, replacement door trim, and grey wool headliner fabric. Lap belts are equipped for front seat occupants, and picnic trays fold down for those in the rear. Burl wood trim shows an even patina on the dash, doors, and pillars. The seller has installed a wood-rimmed Moto-lita steering wheel and wired the horn to the windshield washer switch.

A new wiring harness was fitted during prior refurbishment work, and the ignition switch and blade fuse box were replaced more recently. The center stack houses an aftermarket cassette deck wired to speakers mounted under the front seats. Gauges include a tachometer recalibrated in 2014 and are shown to be operational apart from the clock in a video from the seller below. Approximately 42k miles are shown on the five-digit odometer, 6k of which have been driven by the seller over nine years. Total mileage is unknown. A new fuel tank and sender were installed in 2017.

The 3.8-liter inline six features dual overhead cams and twin SU carburetors, and was rebuilt while with the previous owner. An aluminum radiator was also installed, while additional modifications made by the seller include a PerTronix ignition module, an electric fuel pump, a heavy-duty battery with a cut-off and tender pigtail, a spin-on oil filter adapter, and a hard-wired dash switch for the starting carburetor. The head gasket, ignition components, and harmonic balancer were also replaced under current ownership.

The four-speed manual transmission is paired with an electrically-actuated Laycock de Normanville overdrive, both of which are said to have received fluid changes fewer than 20 miles ago. The clutch and flywheel were replaced by the previous owner, and a new clutch master cylinder was installed by the seller. A stainless exhaust system was also fitted and corrosion in the radiator support was repaired under current ownership.

Jaguar service manuals are included along with the removed stock steering wheel, a set of refinished steel wheels and polished hubcaps, a high-torque starter, a battery tender, and other spares and accessories. The seller notes that the car shows a 1961 manufacturing date but was first registered in 1962.

Previous restoration efforts are documented in included photographs, with excerpts from the collection included in the gallery along with receipts said to cover from 1994-present. A video showing an engine start, walk-around, and driving footage can be viewed below. The car is sold with a Connecticut bill of sale, as the state does not issue titles for vehicles over 15 years of age.
