Car now offered for sale April 2011:
1961 Jaguar MK2 3.8 Litre, Manual with overdrive. British Racing Green, Tan hide, Coombs specification, 3718 miles, Vin 157243
Jaguar introduced the MK2 saloon in 1959 to replacing their first compact model the MK1. The new Mk2 addressed many of the short comings of the previous model. Disc brakes were now standard across the range. A new wide track rear axle was fitted. A larger glass area improved the looks of the car and the visibility. A new interior with the main instruments in front of the driver but retaining the traditional burr walnut and leather. The magnificent XK engine continued to power the range with the addition of the powerful 3.8 litre making this model the world?s fastest production four seater car. This fact made it the car of choice for many well known racing drivers of the period. They were also very popular with member of the criminal fraternity as they could carry three bank robbers, the getaway driver and the loot at very high speed.
Guilford Jaguar dealer John Coombs raced the MK1 and MK2 saloons for the factory along with other Jaguar dealers including Tommy Sopwith?s Equipe Endeavour team. John Coombs garage also offered a range of modifications and upgrades for the MK2. These included performance enhancements to the engine and suspension. Wood rimmed steering wheels, vinyl roof and Tudor Webasto sunshine roofs. These Coombs modified car were built in very small number and were all individual in specification. They are now very sort after and rarely come on the market.
This lovely British Racing Green MK2 has been beautifully restored and enhanced in the style of the rare Coombs cars. It has many desirable upgrades including the straight port cylinder head shared with the E type and triple two inch SU carburettors. Jaguar listed the engine specification at 265BHP. This car also benefits from the later MK2 all synchro four speed gearbox with the over-drive. It is also equipped with power steering, four wheel disc brakes, limited slip differential and lowered suspension. The interior has been expertly trimmed in rich tan leather complimenting the racing green coachwork and the walnut veneers have a deep lustre. A specially made period style audio unit is fitted,. This features CD, I-Pod, USB and SDI card and fits in very nicely. The steering wheel is a wood rimmed Moto-Lita of the period and a Tudor Webasto sunshine roof is fitted. The car sits on Dunlop chromed 72 spoke wire wheels fitted with 185/70/15 radials. The body is super straight with excellent panel fit. The paint is excellent and has a deep shine. On the road the car is a very impressive performer and draws a crowd whenever it is stopped. The original tool kit is present and complete and the car is fitted with front and rear seat belts. Full NSW registration, registration number JAG38A.
A very special MK2 beautifully restored and stimulating to drive. Offered at a price way blow the current build and restoration cost.
