Car to be at auction 2/12
www.bonhams.com/eur/auction/20099/lot/232/

Auction description:
Sale 20099 - The Paris Sale, 2 Feb 2012
Paris
Lot No: 232
One of 2 produced
1966 Jaguar 'FT' Coupé
Coachwork by Carrozzeria Bertone
Chassis no. A1F 25417 DN
Engine no. 7F 2109-8
In 1966, the Italian Jaguar importer Ferruchio Tarchini commissioned Carrozzeria Bertone to build a four-seater coupé based on the Jaguar S-Type saloon, which was displayed on their stand during the 1966 Geneva Motor Show. Initially it was planned to distribute this limited edition model through the Jaguar sales organisation in Italy and abroad, but in the end production was limited to just the show car and the one offered here. It was called the Jaguar 'FT', after the initials of Ferruchio Tarchini. The Geneva show car is still the property of the Tarchini family.
Predating the landmark XJ6 of 1968, this very handsome coupé has that familial Jaguar look, with a Mk10-style radiator grille and a very luxurious interior. This particular car is based on the Jaguar 420 platform, and according to the accompanying Jaguar/Daimler Heritage Trust certificate was supplied as a 'CKD' (Completely Knocked Down) car, to be assembled in Italy with Bertone bodywork. According to the JDHT, the factory supplied seven of these cars to Bertone but this was the only one completed. It was delivered to a wealthy customer in Madrid and stayed there until the current vendor discovered it in a corner of an old garage building. Spanish registration papers come with the car.
We are advised that the Bertone Jaguar remains in very original condition but needs some attention in certain areas. A full repaint is required (the car was originally pale green in colour), there is some rust in the boot floor that needs attention but nothing irreparable, and some of the dashboard switches do not work. After a lengthy period without use, the brakes too require re-commissioning. The engine runs very smoothly, the manual/overdrive gearbox is described as 'perfect', and the original interior is absolutely beautiful with a pleasing degree of patination. A total of 92,410 kilometres (approximately 57,400 miles) is currently displayed on the odometer.
This is the perfect opportunity for the discerning Jaguar collector to add an ultra-rare example to the collection. It is the perfect mix of the traditional Jaguar class with bespoke Italian design. Your perfect entry ticket for Pebble Beach, Villa d'Este or the Goodwood Festival of Speed Concours d'Elegance, and a unique piece of Jaguar history.

Estimate: €80,000 - 120,000

The inside is hideous, and the outside is not far off it , with a top heavy look . What is it about these Italian attempts to build specials ( think of the Frua E type ) which goes so horribly wrong ?

The Guikas Collection, Lot 129

This rare Jaguar is a result of conversations between some of the automotive industry’s most revered names of the 1960s. The Jaguar importer for Northern Italy, Ferruccio Tarchini, commissioned the famous coachbuilder, Bertone, to build a four-seater coupé based on the Jaguar S-Type in 1966. Called the Jaguar “FT Coupe” after Tarchini’s initials, the importer hoped to sell the car through Jaguar’s Italian operations. In the end, only the 1966 Geneva Motor Show exhibition car and the example presently offered were built.

While the Geneva show car was based on the S-Type as originally intended, this unique sister model began life as one of the CKD (“complete knocked-down”) kits using the Jaguar 420 platform. The Coventry-based marque would supply these to the Italian coachbuilder, to be completed with Bertone bodywork.

This FT Coupe was sold new to a Spanish aristocrat, before making its way to a Jaguar dealership, where it would remain stored for 20 years before being rediscovered. It was refinished in its original metallic green colour in 2015, while the interior features charming black leather upholstery. The car is equipped with electric windows, “FT” horn push, and an air conditioning system.

As a rare coach built Jaguar wearing bodywork by a celebrated Italian design house, the Bertone FT Coupé would make for a worthy—and enjoyable—addition to any collection of unique automobiles.
