Car at auction 11/25
online.doningtonauctions.com.au/m/lot-details/index/catalog/262/lot/66970
Auction description:
1961 Jaguar Mark II 3.4 Saloon NO RESERVE [Location: Berridale, NSW]
Mechanically improved and upgraded Mark II
From a private NSW Jaguar collection
Offered with No Reserve
Chassis No. 153216BW
Engine No. KG5540-8
Previously registered in South Australia, this 1961 Mark II is equipped with a 3.4-litre engine and although it was originally an automatic, has been upgraded to a manual gearbox at some stage.
Purchased from Collectable Classics of Strathalbyn, South Australia in October 2017, the Jaguar joined the late owner’s collection and the history file indicates he spent the next seven years gradually improving the car, with copious receipts on file from specialists such as Jagdaim in Victoria. Receipts show the following parts were purchased for the Jaguar:
Upper & lower balljoints & tie rods, control arms and sway bars
Front stub axles and bearings
Rear hubs overhauled & new rear wheel cylinders
Carburettor overhaul kit
New distributor cap, rotor button and plug leads
Ventilated four-pot alloy front racing brake kit from V & A Spiteri
New rear brake calipers and pads
New thermostat, radiator fan, mounts and hoses
Clearly intended as a driver rather than a show car, the Mark II today presents in only fair cosmetic condition, with plenty of cracking evident in the older green paint and some minor rust flaking around the lower doors, along with various stone chips. The front fog lamps don’t align properly but the bodywork is generally reasonably straight and the overall panel fit good. The front windows wind up and down easily but the rear windows need some assistance. At some point the Jaguar has been converted to five-stud 15-inch chrome wire wheels shod with Michelin 205/65 R15 tyres.
Inside the Mark II’s cabin the tan upholstery and door cards present in worn but usable condition, with no obvious tears or other damage to the seats. The timberwork isn’t badly cracked or delaminated and the car now has an aftermarket steering wheel, modern CD player and retractable seatbelts have been installed at some point.
The Jaguar starts and runs well and a short test drive confirmed the suspension and brakes have benefited from all work above, but still needs some fine tuning. Overall it wouldn’t take much to finish this Mark II off as a fast, albeit slightly tatty road car or use it as a good basis for further upgrades/restoration.
Showing 10,066 miles on the clock at the time of cataloguing and supplied with a tool kit in the spare wheel well along with a history file, the Jaguar will be sold unregistered and with No Reserve. Please note the car is located in Berridale, NSW and must be collected on site by arrangement with Donington Auctions.
Winning bid: $12,600
