Sellers description:
This is a once in a lifetime opportunity if you are a Jaguar Enthusiast. This rare early Mark I sedan is a one family owned car in amazing condition with a great story. In 1957 a local attorney Foster V. Phillips Jr. picked up an issue of Autocar magazine and read about the new sports sedan that Jaguar Cars was building. He inquired with the local dealer about purchasing one of the cars and was supplied with a brochure. He ordered the exact car from the brochure in the same colors and specification. Several months later, he took delivery of his new car at the Jaguar Factory in Coventry England and after touring the UK, both he and the car came back to the US on board the SS United States ocean liner. All of these events are recorded in the massive amount of documentation that come with the car. From the first magazine where he read about it, the delivery paperwork, and all the reciepts document his ownership and love of the car.
Mr. Phillips took very good care of his prized Jaguar for many years, using it sparingly and always keeping it on the road and in excellent condition. As you look through the paperwork, you can see all the maintenence and work done to the car as well as the years of registrations, and the letters to the factory to find parts.
After his death, the car was kept at the family home but his son had some general restoration work done on the car to get it back into excellent shape. There are reciepts for all this work as well. This year, the car came into our hands as the son of the original owner no longer had a place to keep the car and did not want it exposed to the elements. Having been covered its entire life, it has stayed a rust free and very original car.
The condition of this car while not perfect is very nice. It recently attended a sanctioned JCNA Jaguar concours where it won first in class and was scored at 96.9 in judging. The one repaint from new is very good with only small flaws. The interior has been completely restored with a Jaguar factory style high quality kit which included all new leather seats, panels and new wilton wool carpet and headliner. The interior wood trim was painstakingly restored with new burl walnut veneer and refinished to a high standard.
Mechanically it has had much work done since the son of the original owner took it out of storage. It has had all new brakes, hydraulics, hoses, belt, carb rebuild etc. Since we recieved the car, we have not done anything to it but I would expect it would make a good driver with only light TLC.
I know that it would be extremely difficult if not impossible to find an early Jaguar Sports sedan of this vintage in comparable shape, much less with such a great story and all of its original paperwork. I have never seen a better documented vintage Jaguar. before this one, I had never seen an original delivery envelope for cars picked up at the factory. The records and letters make for some good reading and facinating history for such a beautiful car.
