As seen in the feature issue of the Just Cars Magazine issue: 319

A culmination of Grace, Pace and Space, the Jaguar 420 is perhaps one of the lesser known saloons in Jaguars range despite outselling all of it’s stablemates during it’s limited production run.

The Jaguar 420 was introduced in 1966 as a model between the S-Type and the huge (by comparison) 420G. It derived the same base 4.2 engine as the larger 420G and E-Type but with only two carburettors producing around 245hp (gross). The overall styling of the 420 resembled the S-type bar with a ‘nicer’ looking front end. The 420 gained various features over the lesser S-Type such as, optional Marles Varamatic power steering, cross flow radiator, duel-line hydraulic braking system, duel 2inch HD8 carburettors, negative earthing, alternator and a pre-engaged starter motor. In 1967, the 420 outsold all other Jaguar saloon models including the MK2’s, Daimler 250, S-type and 420G making it very successful and confirming to Jaguar that a relatively compact and well-appointed saloon car would be very successful thus cumulating in the XJ6 which swept the MKII, S-type and 420 from the Jaguar range. Due to the limited time frame of production, only about 10,000 420’s were produced.

This Stunning Jaguar 420 presents exceptionally well with it’s lustrous Burgundy paintwork, highlighted by its sparkling Chrome wire wheels. Prior to 2012, the 420 underwent a comprehensive restoration during which time it was repainted and interior retrimmed with new beige leather with matching carpets and restored woodwork. During the restoration, along with other mechanical refurbishments, the drivetrain was upgraded and a 4-speed manual gearbox with overdrive was fitted in place of the original Automatic.

This 420 has fantastic visual appeal, whilst the classically styled interior provides the style and elegance which is just to ‘Jaguar’. The 4.2 litre straight six in culmination with he 4 speed manual overdrive provides the 420 with excellent performance with plenty of up and go in any gear while handling remains on point with the factory original power steering delivering effortless turning ability and factory power assisted 4 wheel disc brakes bringing everything to a holt with surety.

Receipts and maintenance records accompany the Jaguar dating back to 1982 confirming work carried out over a number of years as well as the significant number of parts purchased for the restoration work. As a testament to the standard of restoration, this Jaguar has won multiple awards at the Jaguar Car Club National Rally Concours Events.

Being a much rarer proposition than the usual Mk2, S-Type or Mk10/420g, the 420 compact blends the best of all of these executive saloons into a neat stylish package with ample performance on tap. This Jaguar is well worth serious consideration for any discerning Jaguar enthusiast and is available at a fraction of the cost of restoring one to this level.

This Jaguar is sold with RWC.

Spam prevention question (must be answered):
The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
