Lot #180366

This 1959 Jaguar Mk IX spent more than four decades with its original owner, and is powered by a 3.8-liter inline-six linked with a three-speed automatic transmission, both of which were overhauled circa 2012. The car wears a repaint in metallic green over red leather, and it features twin SU carburetors, a sunroof, front and rear disc brakes, power steering, forward auxiliary lighting, 16″ steel wheels, hubcaps, front and rear bench seats, rear picnic tables, and a pushbutton radio. This Mk IX is now offered by the seller on behalf of the owner at no reserve with a Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate, service records, and a clean California title in the owner’s name.

This car is one of 10,009 Mk IX examples produced during the three-year production run. Finished from the factory in British Racing Green, the car was repainted in its current metallic shade of green under prior ownership. Exterior equipment includes a manually operated sunroof, fender-mounted side mirrors, rear fender skirts, auxiliary forward lights, and bumpers with overriders. Dings, scratches, paint imperfections, and touch-up paint are noted by the seller.

The 16″ steel wheels feature hubcaps and trim rings, while Avon Turbospeed Mk4 tires are mounted at each corner. The car is equipped with power steering, and braking is provided by front and rear discs.

The is upholstered in red leather, and interior appointments include a dash-mounted rearview mirror and a pushbutton radio.

The rear bench seat faces a walnut-wood panel housing a set of folding picnic tables and a Smiths clock.

The four-spoke steering wheel frames a walnut veneer dashboard with centrally mounted Smiths instrumentation. The five-digit odometer shows 27k miles, although the seller reports that this figure is not accurate. Approximately 1k miles have been added under current ownership, and total mileage is unknown.

The 3.8-liter inline-six was factory equipped with two SU carburetors and was rated at 220 horsepower and 237 lb-ft of torque when new, which is routed to the rear wheels through a Borg-Warner three-speed automatic transmission. The engine and transmission were overhauled circa 2012.

The Jaguar Heritage Trust Record Trace Certificate lists factory equipment, colors, serial numbers, and a manufacture date of January 9, 1959.

Chassis number 790436BW is shown on the data plate, and the car is titled in California without the “BW” suffix.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
