The car we present here was once such example that Hoffman's New York entity retailed. As verified by Jaguar Cars North American archivist Michael Cook, it was built on June 29, 1950 and left the works 16 days later in mid-July. Then, it was supplied in the understated scheme of Gunmetal Grey, with a French Grey Top and Grey interior. Those same records confirm that the car today retains its original motor, number T9967.

Its original owner isn't recorded, but the current owner has been able to confirm that within 7 years the car had become the property of Bob Ryan of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Mr. Ryan would use the Jaguar for a mere year or so before entering the army, at which point the car was retired to a garage for storage. Incredibly, it would continue to rest there for the next 39 years before being discovered by Don Switter of Westport, Connecticut.

As recounted by the seller, its next chapter involved two periods of restoration, first with mechanical aspects such as the engine being rebuilt in the late 1990s by Nizen Machine, of New Haven, chassis powder coated etc. and then from 2011-2014 the present father and son team oversaw its cosmetics attended to. This included a bare metal respray, chrome refurbishment, new top by Quid Blankly, a new BAS Jaguar interior, new wiring harness, all in all a pretty comprehensive rebuild. Completing it, a set of tools were sourced and are correctly fitted within the trunk lid.

In the course of this, the decision was made to put in into another arguably more handsome, but equally period correct scheme of burgundy body, with black fenders and tan leather trim and top. It is undeniably a great look for the car. Since it was finished 5 years ago, a relatively impressive 5,000 miles have been covered in the car, it being used, toured and shown routinely. Events have included here at Greenwich, where it received an award for Best British Touring Car 1946-1959, at the Jaguar Association of New England in 2015 and a 2nd Place award at the British Motor Car Festival in Bristol, Rhode Island in 2017. This striking Jaguar remains in extremely tidy order and is ready to continue to add to that list.

Offered with the car are various copies of bills for the work and Jaguar Heritage information.

This 1950 Jaguar MK V 3.5L was built on June 29, 1950 and imported to New York by Hoffman Motor Car Co. on July 15, 1950. The car was purchased by the seller in 2011, and a subsequent refurbishment included a repaint in burgundy and black, the installation of a new tan soft top, and an interior retrim in biscuit leather. The matching-numbers 3.5L inline-six is paired with a 4-speed manual transmission. Now showing just over 50k miles, this MK V is being offered with records documenting the refurbishment process, bill of sale, and Connecticut registration in the seller’s name.

Previously finished in Gunmetal Grey, the car received a bare metal respray in its current two-tone burgundy and black color scheme during the refurbishment. A tan fabric soft top with rear window replaced the factory white top. The frame was powdercoated during the paint process. The biscuit leather interior is contrasted by a black steering wheel and dark burl wood trim on the dash, A-pillars, and door tops.

The car rides on independent front suspension with torsion bars and a rigid rear axle with semi-elliptical leaf springs. It is equipped with 4-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Black steel wheels wear chrome hubcaps and are shod with Vredestein Sprint Classic tires.

Smiths instrumentation includes a reverse sweep 5k-rpm tachometer along with a clock, fuel gauge, oil pressure and temperature gauge, ammeter, and 120-mph speedometer. The five-digit odometer indicates 50k miles, with the seller adding around 7k miles since the project was completed. The gauges were refurbished in January 2015 by Nisonger Instruments in Mamaroneck, New York.

The matching-numbers 3,485cc OHV inline-six features dual sidedraft SU carburetors and produced 126 brake horsepower at 4,250 rpm when new. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a 4-speed manual gearbox.

The engine stamp #T9967 corresponds with the number found on the factory data plate.

Receipts documenting the refurbishment process accompany the car, along with the trunk-mounted tool kit.

Built in the UK on June 29 1950, she was shipped over to the US shortly thereafter in July of 1950 and retailed through Max Hoffman's iconic dealership in NYC.

The first owner remains unknown, however, records do show that 7 years later it was registered to a Mr. Ryan in Portsmouth, NH (might he have been the first owner?). He enjoyed the car for roughly a year or so before he enlisted in the Army and parked the car in his garage with about 43,000 miles on her. According to the third owner, a Mr. Switter from southwest CT, this is how he came across her, having set in the Ryan garage for some 39 years. Switter began the rehabilitation process in the early 90's by having Nizen Machine out of New Haven CT complete a full rebuild on the engine, he also pulled the car apart in preparation for the restoration. Things stalled out for him though as well and the car sat in pieces in his garage for another 10-15 years when the current owner came upon her and swept her off to his garage in 2011.

The restoration began again, this time in earnest. The body was stripped and metal work was performed where necessary, the frame was stripped and powder coated, every bit on this car was touched and either replaced or completely refurbished; this includes down to the detail of hand dipping all the SAE nuts and bolts in red dye and the Whitworth nuts/bolts in grey. She is fully numbers matching.

Where the restoration veered away from original/stock was in the paint and interior. Although she came from the factory in England in a somber shade of Gunmetal Grey, over a grey interior with a French Grey hood (convertible top), the decision to bring things up a notch (or two) was made when the pearlescent, deep ruby red paint was chosen to coat the body and tuxedo black on the fenders, BAS out of Washington handled the interior and soft top duties in tan.

Vredestein Sprint Classic radials in 185HR16 size were mounted on the black wheels and she was ready to hit the road.

As mentioned previously, everything on this car came apart and was replaced or rebuilt, over $75,000 in parts receipts are in a folder with the car. The father and son duo did a lion's share of the restoration themselves.

There are 51,000 miles on her now, with the current owner driving her to shows and Jaguar Club events throughout New England, amassing close to 8000 miles on her since the resto was completed in 2014.

As one could easily imagine, this car has won several awards and was judged by Jaguar Clubs of North America certified judges and given a score of 97.46 in the Champion class, with 1.8 entire points coming off for "non-authentic paint" and "radial tires". That says loads for the quality of this build, as on overall quality, fit, finish and cleanliness she would have scored a 99.26.

There isn't much else to say. She runs and drives probably better than new, everything electrical works as it should, wipers, lights, horn, gauges. ( A complete, new wiring harness was installed) Her oil pressure is great, doesn't run hot and charges up where she should.

The hood folds easily. All the tools are correct and fill the tool kit slots in the boot compartment.

If pressed to find fault, there may be four small chips in total on this car, all of them along the two door edges.

The asking rice on her is $115,000
