Auction description:
Historics at Brooklands
Lot 240 - 1951 Jaguar Mk. V Drophead Coupé (3½ Litre)
Registration 425XUF
Chassis Number 640139
Engine Number Z 4747
Odometer reading 23,232 miles
Estimate £38,000 - £46,000

This matching numbers, righthand drive 1951 Jaguar Mk. V Drophead Coupé was supplied new for personal export by Henlys Limited, London and believed to have been shipped to the USA. The car was purchased by Mr Jack Yellen in July 1974 from an advert in the Buffalo Evening News which was placed by Bill Allen of Williamsville, New York. It was Mr. Yellen's intention to carry out a restoration on the car; however this did not happen and he put the car into a collector's car auction in 1981. The next owner was a Mr. James Price who, between 1991 and 1992, had the car restored at a cost of over $33,000, choosing to keep the original colour of suede green with a suede green leather interior. The car was then imported to the UK by the fourth known owner in 2007 who has kept the Mk. V fully maintained and serviced including a brake overhaul, fitting a cartridge oil filter system and replacing the petrol pump with an electronic unit for reliability. Finished in the original colour scheme, this elegant example is supplied with a V5C registration document, a Jaguar Heritage certificate and a file containing the history from 1974 together with the invoices for the 1991/92 restoration. This is a very impressive car which would grace any collection but is also a pleasure to use and drive.

Auction description:

Lot 355

1951 Jaguar MkV 3½-Litre Drophead Coupé

Rare right-hand drive example

Estimate £55,000 - £65,000

Registration No: 425 XUF

Chassis No: 640139

MOT: Exempt

1 of just 108 right-hand drive examples manufactured

Matching chassis and engine numbers and original colour combination

Lavished with extensive mechanical and cosmetic enhancements in both 2015/6 and 2019

Offered with a large history file

Manufactured in 1951, this rare UK-supplied example was dispatched via Henlys Limited, London, in January that year. Originally finished in the complementary colour combination of Suede Green paintwork with Suede Green leather interior upholstery and a matching hood, it was specified with the larger 3½ Litre engine (which had been used to such good effect by the more potent SS100s). Able to boast its factory-fitted powerplant, the Drophead Coupe – like all MkVs – employs a four-speed manual gearbox. Initially restored in the early 1990s, ‘425 XUF’ was further improved by its previous custodian.

In c.2015, chassis ‘640139’ was treated to a full repaint in its original colour scheme, as well as extensive mechanical improvement with a complete brake system overhaul, a new exhaust system with reconditioned manifolds, a reconditioned steering box, renewed cooling system including radiator pipes and hoses, new fuel lines and replacement engine gaskets all provided. New tyres were fitted at this time, with the electrics all scrutinised and an electric choke fitted, plus servicing throughout. In 2019, further attention was provided to the Three-Position Drophead Coupe with a renewed hood along with the insulated headlining, the interior woodwork was removed and treated, and various chrome fixtures and fittings were also refinished.

Supplied with a large history file, this is a rare opportunity to purchase one of the beautiful MkV Dropheads, in 3.5-litre guise, of which just 108 right-hand drive examples were made. An elegant car that surely embodies Jaguar's famous advertising tagline of “Grace, Space, Pace”.

Car now offered at:

1951 Jaguar MKV 3.5 DHC

We are pleased to offer this excellent driving, superbly presented, original RHD Home Market Jaguar MKV onto the market. We have known this Jaguar since 2015 and since then it has had almost £40,000 of expenditure taking it to a lovely, high standard. This strong, honest and smartly presented example was manufactured on the 21st December 1950, dispatched on the 19th January 1951 from Henlys Limited, London and supplied new through Personal Export Delivery.

The Jaguar was subject of an early 1990's restoration but between 2015 and 2019 a major program of work was undertaken. First of all in 2015/2016 the Jaguar was subject of £20,000 worth of expenditure and in 2019, a further £15,000 in detailed work that put the Jaguar to an exceptional standard. We then sold the car to the last owner in 2020 who has thoroughly enjoyed ownership of this impressive motor car. The first stage of re-commissioning work included a brake overhaul to include new wheel cylinder cup seals and re-lined brake shoes, a new exhaust system at the cost of almost £1000 alone was fitted and the manifolds sent to specialists for re-conditioning. Ball joint boots were replaced, as were track rod rubbers and the steering box subject of re-conditioning work. Further expenditure included replacing aged heater hoses, radiator hoses, the radiator cap seals, fuel pipes and the sump gasket and rocker cover gaskets were replaced curing oil leaks. Aged tyres were replaced with recommended replacements from Longstone Tyres at the cost of almost £1000 and the washer pump and door lock and handle replaced.

Having had a program of mechanical work carried out, the Jaguar was stripped down with the removal of bright work and windscreen. All wheels were removed, and inner arches and wings checked, the underside was fully cleaned off, checked over and the chassis found to be very strong. Paint was removed from the vehicle and areas with micro-blistering were taken down to bare metal. Any corrosion found on the body was removed and the car then fully prepared ahead of a full re-paint. The Jaguar MKV was fully re-painted to a high standard and the car re-fitted with brand new wing piping. The underside was treated to waxoyling and the engine bay detailed. The door shut areas were also prepared and painted, as was the boot area and wheels. Detail work included painting the chrome hub caps correctly, preparing and re-painting the wheels and Framptons supplied correct sized white digit number plates. In 2019, the aged Cream hood was removed and a brand new mohair hood made in the cars original hood colour (French Grey). All woodwork was removed from the car, treated to re-varnishing and polishing, then carefully re-fitted to the car. Since being owned by one of our fastidious customers on the South Coast, further detailing and cosmetic improvements include sourcing a correct jack, renewing jacking point bungs, fitting new pedal pads, various new chrome fittings and fixtures around the body and re-chroming carried out to the front bumper and number plate plinth, headlamp finishers, rear light clusters and interior dash ash-tray. The recent owner has also managed to source a model of the car commissioned several years ago that displays the registration mark 425 XUF. On return to us in 2020, we quickly sold the MKV DHC to one of our local customers who owned the car for almosy four years. We then quickly sold the MKV to a Norfolk based customer who buys several cars per year from us and is now ready for his next classic.

As result of the above work, this stunning Jaguar MKV now presents superbly on the body with an exceptional paint finish and lovely straight panels with very good gaps. The frame work has all been checked and we can confirm the car is structurally excellent. The chrome work is of an excellent standard and the Jaguar stands correct and has a large, imposing and very impressive look. The interior has nicely aged with good quality carpets, smart, clean upholstery that has recently had renovation work and the woodwork is exceptional after the recent works. All dashboard gauges work correctly and many original items such as the steering wheel are in place and in lovely order. The MKV is a true delight to drive with the lovely strong 3.5 litre engine holding excellent oil pressure. The gearbox is a superb to use and brakes, steering and suspension are all sharp ensuring the driving experience is first class in every respect. The wonderful MKV cruises gracefully with first class performance, luxury and character. The MKV comes with an exceptional history file with a mass of correspondence dating back to the early 1970's and confirms details of a major restoration in 1991/1992 with invoices present detailing thousands of pounds worth of expenditure.
