Sellers description:
What a great Barn find!! This 1949 Mark V Jaguar saloon is a perfect candidate for restoration or could be driving as is with probably not too much effort. it wasn't literally found in a barn but has been stored in a garage for the last 11 years. I purchased it from someone I have known a long time who was driving it regularly as recently as 1991. he said the starter was having problems so he stopped driving it and around that same time he went through a messy divorce and the car was left outside for several years which caused the paint and interior to deteriorate. Sure enough when I tried to get it going I found the starter was bad and needs to be replaced or rebuilt.
The Body is in excellent condition, very straight with no real rust except surface rust on the roof where the paint is sun burned. The doors all open and close with a very solid thud and no drooping. Underneath the frame looks solid as can be with no rust problems, In fact the only rusty area I can find on the whole car is the metal lip that holds the rubber door seal on both front door sills near the bottom, a fairly easy area to repair.
Since the starter doesn't function I have not been able to run the engine but it does turn over freely with the hand crank and has compression. a reciept with the paperwork dated 1986 shows it had 160lbs compression on all 6 cylinders at that time, not long before it stopped being driven. It has the big 3.5 litre straight six pushrod engine and a manual four speed gearbox. The clutch pedal feels like it is still working but the brake pedal goes to the floor and i'm sure the hydraulics will need to be gone through.
The period looking whitewall tyres all hold air and look good (no cracking, tread near new). The chrome is sort of a mix the bumpers have a lot of chrome flaking off although they are straight and could be re-chromed. The radiator shell and most of the other chrome looks pretty good. All the glass is good except the windscreen has some bubbling in the lamination around the outer edge but because it is flat it is very easy and inexpensive to replace.
The Interior is probably where the car has suffered the most. The leather is pretty rough and hard. the wood is all there and some isn't too bad while other pieces will definitely need a lot of attention or just replaced. The head liner is very rough and mostly missing from the sun roof. It is very complete with no missing hardware or gauges etc..
the car does come with keys and some reciept and paperwork including original owners manual and a spare parts catalogue. It does have a clear Title.
