First registered on 20th September 1950, this particular car was supplied new to a Mr Bill by PJ Evans of Birmingham. He and his son kept the car right up until 1982 when it was acquired by the Jaguar Motor Museum in Maldon, where it was put on display for the next 12 years. In 1985 it took part in the Motor 100 celebrations at Silverstone and it was also featured at about this time in the Roger Hicks book, 'Classic Jaguar Cars', a copy of which is included in the sale. In 1994 it was acquired by the current vendor who has kept it under cover in a heated garage ever since.

The car is unusual in that it features a larger rear window than the standard MkV model and also has cut-away rear wheel-arches rather than the standard fitment spats. According to a letter from Mr Bill's son in the history file, these alterations were carried out at the Jaguar factory at the express wishes of his father who appears to have been a personal friend of William Lyons. Mr Bill also had an altimeter fitted to the dashboard, an instrument he apparently found useful when touring on the continent.

Before his death in 1966, Mr Bill also had the engine fully overhauled by a Jaguar specialist and the current vendor believes that the odometer was re-set to zero at that time. The 3,500 miles now displayed on the clock is believed to be the total mileage covered since then and is backed up by various old MOT certificates going back to 1962. A letter from Mr Bill's son states that the car was not used at all between 1966 and 1982.

The current vendor has also barely used the car but he has run it and moved it frequently and it certainly fired up readily on the occasion of our visit and ran very sweetly. At some point in Mr Bill's ownership, the colour of the car was changed from the original Sherwood Gunmetal that is stated in the buff log book to the butterscotch shade it wears today – a very fashionable shade in the 1950s.

The car appears to be otherwise wholly original and unrestored, with a lovely patinated pale blue leather interior and no signs whatsoever of any corrosion. It comes complete with a soft car cover, a spare parts catalogue and a factory workshop manual.

MkV Jaguars of any kind are now extremely rare and you could wait years to find another one as original and charming as this. Altogether a most elegant and distinctive machine with a well-documented history that would make a fine addition to any collection.
