Car to be at auciton 9/16

Auction description:
Model: MkIV
First Registered: 1948
Registration No: GVC321
Mileometer:
Chassis No:612197
MOT:
Colour:Black

This Jaguar 3.5 Litre Saloon is Concours condition (or very close), is a matching numbers car and has an interesting past.

Originally registered in 1948 to Jaguar Cars Limited. This was the Car for Mr A Whittaker; Chairman of Jaguar Cars. As this was to be his car he apparently specified some special features for "his" Car such as the unusual Leather Pigskin interior. Although the car has been completely restored, the original rear seat back is still present with all the other seats re-trimmed to match. The Car was then sold directly from the Jaguar Cars Limited in December 1949 and was never sold through a dealer network. All of the above has been verified by documents from the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust.

The complete pictorially verified restoration started in 1982 by Mr David Priest who restored with meticulous detail (as shown by the drawings he created to have parts specifically manufactured to original specifications) over a long period. It was remarkable and painstaking vigil however ill health required that the restoration was completed by Marque specialists "David Davenport Cars" (to an equally high standard) some 22 years after it was started!

Although as stated the Car is built very closely to original specifications it does benefit from a very tastefully installed Kenlowe Electric Fan.

Today the Car is still in Excellent condition and full running order with nearly new Blockley Tyres, original style Battery, rare original Cigar Lighter etc etc. A particular Highlight is the complete and impeccable Toolkit in the boot, surely one of the best toolkits anywhere

With the Car comes a significant file of documents including an original Handbook (instruction Book), original Service Manual, Green Log Book (continuation), many Tax Discs, MOT's etc plus Production Records and other general documents

Guide Price: £50,000 to £60,000

Car to return to auction 3/17
www.historics.co.uk/buying/auctions/2017-03-04/cars/ref-36-1948-jaguar-mk-iv,-35 ...

Auction description:
Registration GVC 321
Chassis Number 612197
Engine Number 52273
Odometer reading 63,750 miles
Estimate £55,000 - £65,000

First registered to Jaguar Cars Ltd (Arthur Whittaker)
Lovely leather and walnut interior (originally ordered in with pigskin leather)
Wonderful and complete tool kit
Large history file plus the often missing cigarette lighter present

We are delighted to offer this, matching numbers, 1948 Jaguar Mk. IV 3.5 Litre Saloon that, not only is presented in excellent order throughout, but also was first registered to one of Jaguar's most important employees, therefore, it sits as a significant motor car in Jaguar's history. Within the large history file, resides the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Production Record Certificate, confirming that this Jaguar was manufactured on 22nd December 1948 and dispatched on 14th January 1949. The first recorded owner was Jaguar Cars Ltd (Arthur Whittaker); Mr Arthur Whittaker being at that time, the Deputy Chairman of Jaguar Cars Ltd. Whittaker, a former apprentice at the Imperial Garage, Blackpool, joined Swallow Sidecars as a salesman when he was just 17 years of age (Swallow Side Cars being the first company that William Lyons started with William Walmsley before it became SS Cars Ltd. and later Jaguar Cars ltd.) He eventually became the chief assistant to William Lyons and proved to be more outstanding in business than in sales and stayed with Jaguar for some 50 years becoming one of Jaguar's mainstay businessmen and a director on the board. At the time that this fine Mk. IV was produced, it is likely that the car was ordered with some special features. What we do know is that it left the factory with its coachwork in black and its specially ordered pigskin leather interior. It was also registered with a Coventry (VC) number plate. An extensive restoration of GVC 321 began in 1982 by Mr. David Priest who paid meticulous attention to every detail as may be seen by the drawings, within the history file, that were created to enable parts to be re-manufactured to the original specifications. Sadly, ill health resulted in the restoration being completed by the marque specialists, David Davenport, some 22 years later.

Today, the Jaguar may be described as in near concourse condition; the restoration having kept the car as close as possible to the original specifications. The coachwork presents very well and is complemented by the extensive chrome trim and fittings. A sunroof operates and, we are informed, does not leak in inclement weather conditions. Mechanically, the Jaguar operates as it should, the engine starting and running smoothly. However, a sensible addition is a discreetly installed Kenlow fan to add extra protection to the cooling system if required. An original styled battery provides the electrics whilst the car sits upon a nearly new set of Blockley tyres. On the inside, the leather interior is beautifully soft and subtle, all having been replaced during restoration apart from the rear seat back that still retains the original pigskin covering. The extensive burr walnut wood dashboard and trimmings are all in excellent condition. The rare cigarette lighter is present but the highlight of this Jaguar must be its complete and impeccable tool kit stored within the boot; it is one of the best we have seen. The previously mentioned history file is extensive and includes a genuine Jaguar service manual and instruction book, a Continuation, old style, green log book, drawings, photographs during restoration and a hand written notebook recording works carried out by the current owner who purchased it in June 2009. Most recent works include a new starter motor solenoid, lubricated grease points, oils and filter checked and brakes inspected. This UK registered Jaguar Mk. IV, although MoT exempt, has a current MoT test certificate valid until September 2017.

Taking into consideration the condition and history of this Jaguar, we believe it to be one of the finest in existence, a bold statement perhaps, but one that stands scrutiny upon inspection.

From Jaguar Magazine:
www.jaguarmagazine.com/jaguar-directors-grandchildren-buy-mkiv-saloon/

A classic 1948 Jaguar sports saloon, first owned by Arthur Whittaker, the Deputy Chairman of Jaguar Cars, has been re-united with his family 67 years after he parted with it.

During Historics at Brooklands classic car auction in Surrey on Saturday, 4th March, Whittaker's four granddaughters - Lucy, Sally, Sarah and Charlotte - who discovered the car's impending sale purely by chance a fortnight earlier - fought off rival bidders to make it their own, settling on £70,000 for the jet black classic.

It will return to the eldest granddaughter Lucy's family home in Kenilworth, just miles from the former Jaguar factory in Brown's Lane, Coventry where it was originally manufactured 69 years ago.

"Once we discovered grandad's Jaguar was for sale, we just had to go and see it", said Sally. "We had no intention of buying it, but sitting in it before the sale brought back so many fond memories of family outings in his cars that we decided we just had to bid for it," she continued.
