Auction description:
Lot 189
c.1947 Jaguar 2½-Litre 'Mark IV' Saloon
Registration no. GRU 575
Chassis no. 510568
Engine no. P586
£15,000 - 20,000
US$ 25,000 - 34,000
To be sold without reserve

This particular Jaguar 2½-Litre saloon is offered for sale following the death of its owner, who is believed to have owned it since the 1960s. Well stored and apparently fundamentally sound, the car was last used in 1978 and will require re-commissioning before returning to the road. The interior trim appears original and is in very good order, while tool kit is almost complete. It is hoped that documents and further information regarding its history will have come to light by time of sale.

Car now offered at:

Sellers description:
1947 Jaguar MKIV 2.5 Saloon

GRU 575 was manufactured on the 7th May 1947 and was supplied new by Henlys, London to Harold Streeter. The Jaguar MKIV 2.5 left left the factory finished in Black with Brown leather upholstery and was allocated a Bournemouth registration mark. Our Jaguar had one owner from the 1960's for over 50 years but was taken off the road in 1978 and has recently undergone a £20,000 programme of recommissioning work. The Jaguar comes with Heritage Certificate, tax discs from 1975 and 1978 and is remarkably original, still retaining its original leather upholstery suggesting the recorded mileage of 79,000 is correct.
This MKIV Jaguar is an absolute time warp and for this reason we have chosen to keep as much of the car original as possible. The strong, straight body still retains some original Black paint and whilst there are some dents and blemishes on areas of the car, it presents as an honest, low mileage example should. Finding an original RHD MKIV like this could be impossible, this really has been carefully preserved and untouched on the exterior for many years. It's 1978 tax disc is still on the windscreen, the cars Lucas headlamps are original, large and impressive and the Jaguar has an imposing presence. GRU 575 has a delightful interior with its original leather from 1947 still presenting well. The car has recently been treated to a new carpet set and headlining after 70 years, door cards and door furflexes have also been replaced. The underside of the car is totally solid and original, in excellent order.

A major programme of mechanical work has been undertaken and this included a full engine rebuild to include a rebore, new pistons, main and big end bearings, machined con rods, crankshaft re-grind, full gasket set, new timing chain and tensioner. The cylinder head was refaced, seats and valves refaced and the engine re-fitted on build up to a detailed engine bay. The water pump was rebuilt, rocker shaft replaced, water manifold and thermostat housing replaced, all ignition items replaced, carburettors rebuilt and the starter motor reconditioned. The speedo and rev counter were sent away for reconditioning, front and rear brake shoes were relined, brake arms and clutch arm reconditioned, the junction box was re-wired, the wiper motor rewired and a new set of tyres fitted to the car. Since completion the Jaguar has completed some running in miles and is both driving and performing superbly. The engine runs perfectly with excellent oil pressure and gear changes are lovely and smooth. The handling and steering feels tight and responsive and brakes pull up straight. GRU 575 is an absolute delight and is a true time warp that has avoided heavy deterioration in 70 years, it has been dry stored, kept structurally superb and having had its recent programme of work, is ready to be used and enjoyed on the road after almost forty years hidden. This is a wonderful opportunity and we are delighted to have been involved in carefully preserving this wonderful rare motor car.
