Acquired new by the vendor’s family in 1964
Used quite sparingly until 1982, reportedly accruing around 39,000 kilometres
Awakened from its slumber in 2011 where the car was used at a wedding following some recommissioning
Since 2011, it has reportedly only driven around 70 kilometres
Carefully stored inside, under a cover and with its wheels off the ground
The vendor conforms us that the indicated odometer reading is therefore correct
Original handbook (in french and English)
Registration documentation present including older paperwork
The Interior
Professionally retrimmed some years ago
Upholstered in beige leather
Delightful patina on show in places
This Jaguar’s interior strikes a great balance between preserved originality and sympathetic restoration. Where necessary, items have been restored to their former glory and equally, certain elements have been left alone as they remain eminently serviceable. This is an admirable approach to restoration and one that we heartily approve of.
The seats have evidently been retrimmed to a very good standard and remain in fantastic condition, having been used exceedingly little. The carpeting shows its age a little, but remains serviceable throughout. The same can be said of the headlining which bears a few marks but is still in reasonably good condition. Some of the remaining leather work like the centre console and gearstick gaiter have suffered a little with age.
Besides the soft furnishings, there’s a great deal of highly figured woodwork in the form of solid walnut which now exhibits a nice patina. We particularly enjoy the gentle wear to the controls, switchgear and period correct Autovox radio.
The vendor points out that an enormous boot houses the original tool kit and jack.
The Exterior
Repainted but retaining its original colour
No signs of serious corrosion topside or underneath
Straight bodywork with good panel alignment
The paint still looks really good with relatively few blemishes and the vendor informs us that it was refinished some years ago. We didn’t spot any big marks and it still has a great shine when exposed to the sun.
The bodywork looks to be really straight and we notice the panels align nicely, as do the doors. We didn’t see any corrosion to the body or indeed the underside and the vendor remarks that there’s not any rust at all. Evidently, this car has been stored very carefully its whole life which has really paid dividends.
The chromework shows its age somewhat in places but there’s no noticeable damage as such, just a little deterioration. The wheels look to be in really good order and the vendor points out the Michelin XWX 205 VR 14 tyres that were apparently designed specifically for this car. These tyres have reportedly only covered about 250 kilometres on the road and have been lifted off the ground when not in use to prevent flat spots.
The Mechanics
3.8-litre DOHC straight-six
Four-speed manual gearbox
Apparently in need of some light recommissioning before it can run and drive
As it’s from 1964, this is amongst the last MK10s to come equipped with the 3.8-litre engine, before the 4.2 unit was fitted thereafter. The vendor informs us that it has always run quite well, although is not currently in usable condition. The vendor advises that a new battery will be required, as well as a general overhaul of the brakes, clutch, fluids and filters. The Jaguar is not running at present although the engine apparently moves freely with no apparent issues.
The vendor describes the brakes as “at 40 percent”, suggesting that they shall require some maintenance to bring the stopping power of this big car back to where it ought to be. The clutch too is apparently rather heavy, especially if the car is used infrequently.
We understand that an auto electrician has isolated some of the wiring to avoid shorts and that the battery is soon drained unless it is isolated when not in use via a switch that has been added.
