An absolute one-off, this replica of a 1954 “short nose, no fin” Jaguar D-type was constructed over a 15-year period and has lived a life since. All the design cues of the legendary D-type are there, recreated faithfully in a replica personally constructed for road use. Our example’s aluminium semi-monocoque chassis was produced by Tempero in New Zealand c1980 and was one of two imported into Australia. Its enthusiast scientist constructor/owner began work on this replica in 1983 and finally completed it in 1998. First job was to correct the shape of the aluminium body’s head fairing and rear wheel arches, after which a 1963 Jaguar MK 10 3.8 litre six-cylinder engine was fitted, and converted to E-type specification. It was hooked up to a 1965 S-type Jaguar four-speed transmission and a Salisbury differential, mounted in a subframe at the rear. Suspension front and rear is E-type Jaguar, as is the steering. Brakes are also Mk 10 Jaguar with some E-type components, while the wheels are newly-made c1985 cast aluminium and steel, five-stud pattern rather than knock-off, but to the original D-type design. Used regularly on the roads of regional Victoria, this one-off D-type replica is complete and wears patina appropriate to its age and regular use. The British Racing Green paint on the aluminium bodywork needs attention, as does the driver’s seat. The passenger seat under the removable enclosed bodywork is in better shape. An incredible amount of supporting documentation comes with this car, including a detailed construction manual complete with descriptions, explanations, notes, diagrams and photos, put together by the owner/constructor. There’s even notes on how to start and maintain it, wiring diagrams, receipts and a hardcover book on D-types. Nothing has been left to chance. Part of a small private collection from a deceased estate, this D-type replica was previously on Victorian club registration but is being offered for sale unregistered.
