Lot #72947

This 1961 Jaguar Mark II is finished in metallic gray over tan leather and is powered by a 3.8-liter inline-six paired with a three-speed automatic transmission. Equipment includes 15” wire wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, dual SU carburetors, fold-down rear tables, and an AM radio. The car is said to have undergone a refurbishment in the 1980s that included a repaint and was acquired by the seller out of California in 2021. Subsequent work is said to have included rebuilding the carburetors and replacing the distributor, ignition coil, spark plugs, ignition wires, steering box, center link, and tie rod ends. This Mark II is now offered with a tool kit, spare parts, partial service records, and a Washington State title in the seller’s name listing the car as a 1962 model.

The body is said to have been refinished in metallic gray under previous ownership and features Coombs-style spats, fender-mounted side mirrors, and chrome bumpers with overriders.

Chrome-finished 15” wire wheels wear knock-off spinners and are mounted with older 205/70 Uniroyal Tiger Paw AWP II tires. Stopping power is provided by four-wheel disc brakes. The steering box, tie rods, and center link were replaced in 2019.

The cabin features front bucket seats and a rear bench upholstered in tan leather with wood trim on the dash, door panels, and window surrounds. Amenities include a push-button AM radio and fold-down wooden tables for rear occupants. The seller recommends refinishing the upper dash and notes that the heater core has been bypassed. A replacement heater core and coolant pipes are included in the sale.

The two-spoke steering wheel frames a 140-mph speedometer and a tachometer with an inset analog clock. Auxiliary gauges are mounted in the center of the dash. The five-digit odometer shows 80k miles, approximately 1k of which have been added by the seller. True mileage is unknown.

The 3.8-liter inline-six is equipped with dual SU carburetors, which are said to have been rebuilt under current ownership. Additional work performed since 2021 reportedly included an oil change and replacement of the distributor, ignition coil, spark plugs, and ignition wires. A replacement cylinder head was rebuilt and installed in 2018, and the car features a screw-on oil filter adapter. The seller notes that the valves may need adjustment, and recommends adjusting or replacing the timing chain.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a three-speed automatic transmission. The seller recommends adjusting the shift points.

The seller is unable to locate the chassis plate on the vehicle itself. Chassis number 217436 is consistent with that of a left-hand-drive 1961 Jaguar MK II with a 3.8L inline-six.

The Washington State title lists “duplicate” under the comments section and “antique” under the brands section.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
