Lot 41
The Nick Mason 1991 Carrera Panamericana
1963 Jaguar Proteus C-Type Re-Creation
CHASSIS NO. 1J50370BW
ENGINE NO. 7J505248

$90,000 - $120,000

Presented in virtually the same appearance in which it ran the Carrera Panamericana Revival in 1991, this fully race-prepared replica Jaguar C-Type was built on a Proteus (Lynx) chassis by Ten Tenths, the vintage race car company co-owned by Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason.

The car utilizes a drivetrain taken from a 1962 Jaguar 3.4 Mk II saloon that Mason purchased from David Eidens of Guildford, UK, bearing registration SLW220F. That registration, along with the saloon's identity plate, was transferred to the Proteus.

The Proteus C-Type replica is constructed on a steel tube-frame chassis with an alloy envelope body, faithfully replicating the original C-Type. Dave Butcher of DJB Performance prepared the Mk II's already potent 3.4-litre twin-cam six, which was uprated with triple sidedraft Weber 45 DCOE carburetion. The engine drives through the Mk II's four-speed, fully synchronized overdrive gearbox and rear axle.

Ten Tenths installed a substantial roll bar with an upper section that can be removed for street use. A pair of Sparco racing seats was fitted along with two pairs of four-point Willans racing belts, all of which remain with the car. The Terratria rally computer used in that event is also included. A large skid plate was mounted beneath the engine for protection during the Carrera Panamericana, as well as a fire suppression system and a modern fuel cell. Proper 72-spoke, Jaguar knock-off wire wheels with radial tires were installed, and a spare wheel and tire were stored in the tail section.

After the Carrera Panamericana, the car was sold and eventually made its way to the US, and was owned by Christopher Sloan of Atlanta, Georgia. This car has not been raced since the 1991 Carrera Panamericana, driven only for touring by Mr. Sloan over the past 10 years, showing 12,342 miles at the time of cataloguing. It is described by the consignor as being properly maintained and in excellent running condition. The engine currently shows strong and even compression readings of 145, 155, 145, 155, 145, and 145 lbs. Cosmetically, the car appears in its Carrera Panamericana livery, with all period decals in place. Although the interior bears the patina expected in a racing car that has been driven hard, the aluminum body and paint are described by the consignor as being in lovely condition with only a few small stone chips visible. Currently ready for road use, this car is sure to delight any Jaguar enthusiast with a taste for celebrity provenance.

1962 Jaguar C-Type Proteus Recreation

Lot 873 | Passion for the Drive: The Cars of Jim Taylor | Estimate $150,000 - $200,000

Chassis No. 1J 50370 BW

This fully race-prepared Jaguar C-Type recreation was built by Ten Tenths, the vintage race car company co-owned by Pink Floyd drummer and legendary sports car enthusiast, Nick Mason. Based upon a Proteus steel tube-frame chassis with an alloy envelope body, both faithful to the original C-Type design, the car was fitted with a Jaguar 3.4-litre six built by Dave Butcher of DJB Performance of Coventry with triple sidedraft Weber 45 DCOE carburetors, delivering their power through a Jaguar synchromesh four-speed overdrive gearbox and rear axle. Power disc brakes were fitted at all four corners.

As this car was intended to run in the challenging Carrera Panamericana, it was fitted with a large under-chassis skid plate, fire suppression system, modern fuel cell, and turn signals as well as Avon radial tires for the 16-inch knock-off wire wheels, with a spare in the tail section. The interior was outfitted with Willans four-point harnesses, as well as a Terratrip rally computer among the Smiths gauges, all protected by a subtle but rugged removable roll bar.

Mason drove the car with Val Lindsay in the 1991 Carrera Panamericana, after which it moved to the United States and would be acquired by Christopher Sloan, who used it for touring for over a decade. In March of 2013 it was purchased by Jim Taylor, in whose stable it remains, documented by a former British registration document in Mason's name. Mr. Taylor's enthusiast friends had often asked to accompany him on a rally in the C-Type; wary of letting them behind the wheel of his prized machine, Mr. Taylor would insist that they practice first on this 'trainer.'

Ideal for such purposes, or simply for exercising with pleasure on modern roads and highways, the Ten Tenths Proteus C-Type is also capable of once again tackling the Mexican Road Race!

About Nick Mason and Ten Tenths Racing:

Nick Mason has been collecting cars since the heyday of Pink Floyd and is considered by many in the industry to be a true connoisseur...His Ten Tenths Racing Company and Collection of cars are regularly used on road and in competition, with appearances at events in the U.K. from London to Brighton to the Le Mans Classic. They are dedicated to keeping the cars in his collection in peak operating condition, and as such are considered by many to be some of the best-loved, hardest-used and most-often seen in the entire classic car world. Nick has an established history of competition with Jaguars, including his Jaguar D-type – which was a three-owner, 20,000-mile 1954 car he has owned since the late 1970s. ‘It was the first serious car I bought,’ he says. It wasn’t to be the last…”

Famed British racing driver Stirling Moss said it best when he described Nick Mason’s private car collection and Ten Tenths as being “that rare, if ever, fleeting moment when a racing driver and his car are at their ultimate limit.”

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
