Jaguar 420, 1968 - Sold
www.classicautoinvest.fr/autos-vendues/jaguar-420/
The Jaguar 420 is certainly the least known of the MK saloon line, which was launched in 1955 with the MK1 and then in 1959 with the famous MK2 in 1964. As these versions are now highly sought after and their value is high, it is worth taking an interest in the evolutions of the MK line, in particular the S Type and the 420.
These two models share two important technical developments: the rear axle borrowed from the E-Type and Mark X, with independent suspension and inboard disc brakes. And the Jaguar synchronized gearbox associated with overdrive, which offers much more pleasant shifts than the original Moss gearbox fitted to the first MK2s.
The 420 is the ultimate evolution of this line and will be produced from 1966 to 1968, as a version above the Type S 3.8. The 420 borrows its front end from the large Mark X/420 G limousine, to modernize it, this one being in the broad strokes close to the future XJ6 S1. The central and rear part remains that enlarged of the S Type saloon, with its giant trunk of more than 500 liters and its improved rear habitability.
Compared to the MK2, the 420 features several technical improvements: an alternator instead of the dynamo, a braking system equipped with two master cylinders and power assisted. Of course, the major evolution concerns the engine. The well-known 6-cylinder in the 4.2 version with double carburetor is that of the XJ series 1 (launched in 1968). Its torque and power are superior to the previous 3.8 which allows the 420 even more flexibility of use and brilliant performances for the time. During its test in 1967 the English magazine Motor will measure the acceleration 0-50 mph at 7.0 sec, 1.5 sec less than the 3.8 S Type, and a maximum speed of 185 km/h.
This 420 sedan was delivered new in France in May 1968 (you had to be daring!). Third-hand for 20 years, its current collector owner has been able to keep all the original documentation since its delivery (updated maintenance book, mining report, instructions) which ensures very good traceability for the car.
The gunmetal-colored bodywork is paired with entirely original and delightfully patinated blue leather. The car benefited from a high-quality restoration in the mid-90s: bodywork and mechanicals (complete engine redone in 1989). The paintwork is still superb, with a few minor chips (see detailed photos) and absolutely no corrosion. The underbody is completely sound. The woodwork is in excellent original condition, with no cracks, a sign of conservation away from light. All the on-board equipment works, as does the very modern vacuum heating system.
Mechanically well-maintained, the 4.2 runs smoothly. The overdrive is functional. Recent work was carried out in a specialist garage: original starter motor rebuilt, new alternator and regulator, refurbished brake calipers, two new brake master cylinders, new master cylinder, treated reservoirs, new gauges. This 420 is ready to hit the road.
For connoisseurs of classic Jaguars, the 420 is generally considered the most enjoyable to drive and the most accomplished. Little known to the public and rare (only 16,000 examples, including Daimler versions), it remains less highly valued than the Type S and MK2, but its value increases with the following, or even catches up with them as over time its obvious qualities are recognized.
Possibility of 12-month national warranty.
