Car to be at auction 8/14
auctionsamerica.com/events/feature-lots.cfm

Auction description:
California
July 31-August 2, 2014
1965 Jaguar D-Type Re-creation
The ex-Bob Pond Collection
Lot No. 3111
To be offered on Saturday, August 2, 2014
Estimate: $125,000 - $175,000

Lynx Motors, Ltd., of St. Leonards on Sea, East Sussex, UK, was founded by Roger Ludgate in 1968 as a repair and maintenance operation for racing cars. Applying more advanced engineering skills, Lynx Motors showed its first D-Type construction in 1974. It was an instant hit, and 41 have since been built, along with nine C-Type replicas. Recognized as one of the top-flight constructors, Lynx meticulously rebuilds every part salvaged from a donor car before installing it on their custom-built chassis.

This Lynx D-Type takes its power from a 4,235-cc engine from a Daimler Sovereign, an equivalent model to Jaguar's 420. Carburetion comprises three 45DCOE152 Webers. It has a four-speed manual gearbox and four-wheel disc brakes. The color, of course, is British Racing Green.

The craftsmanship is very good, with excellent contours, paint and body alignment. The doors close with a satisfying "snick." The single seat is soft black leather, with racing belts and shoulder harness. There are no other creature comforts. The car runs on correct Dunlop steel knock-off wheels, with Dunlop SP AquaJet ER70H15 tires.

Ideally, everyone would like to have a real D-Type Jaguar. Given the realities of supply, however, the replica route is much more attainable and affordable. Moreover, it is just as much fun.

Car to return to auction 8/16
www.mecum.com/lots/CA0816-259990/1965-jaguar-d-type-replica

Auction description:
Lot F167 Monterey 2016 Aug 18-20
Color Green
VIN/Serial 1D50661BW
Estimate $190,000 - $250,000

27,091 miles
Constructed by Tempero
Straight aluminum body replicating an early short nose D-type
4.2L XK engine with triple Weber 45mm carburetors
4-speed manual transmission
Green with black leather interior
Jaguar independent rear suspension
Dunlop alloy wheels
3 spoke steering wheel
Smiths gauges
Telescopic steering column
Alternator-driven charging system

Based on and registered as a 1965 Jaguar, this Jaguar D-Type Replica was constructed by Tempero, a third generation New Zealand coachwork builder that has been operating since 1946. They are known for recreations of 1950s era sports cars such as the Jaguar D-Type, C-Type, Aston Martin DBR2 and Ferrari California and TR250 and are built using traditional practices of hammering and shaping aluminum panels by hand. Finished in traditional and beautiful British Racing Green, this Jaguar D-Type is a fine example of Tempero craftsmanship that is clean throughout and presents itself very nicely. The exterior shows beautiful workmanship with straight sheet metal and nearly flawless paint. The car comes with the removable hard cover for the passenger side, that when removed, allows for a passenger to ride. Features such as the proper leather tie down straps and correct Dunlop alloy wheels add to the car's authenticity. The authentic feel of D-Type-aura flows into the interior with a three-spoked wooden steering wheel mounted on a telescoping steering column, correct Smiths gauges and Perspex windscreen. The leather is in great shape throughout as are the safety harnesses and gauges. A 4.2L straight-6 XK engine is nestled down under the hood, equipped with triple Weber 45mm side draft carburetors and mated to a 4-speed manual transmission. The engine compartment is clean and purposeful and shows excellent craftsmanship. And speaking of workmanship, the professionally built aluminum body emulates the early "short nose" D-Type. An alternator-driven charging system offers a great improvement over the technology of the day. Owning an original D-Type is beyond the means of all but the wealthiest collectors, but this Tempero-built D-Type Replica gives unique thrills all its own in a spectacular package.
