Make Jaguar
Model Mk II 3.4 Saloon

Rolling off the Jaguar production line in 1967, this charming and numbers matching Mark II offered with the desirable specification of being a manual 3.4 lite with overdrive. Used regularly by its current custodians, and a reluctant sale due to a house-move.

Offered with a fastidiously kept history file containing a swathe of old invoices, MOT's and tax discs dating as far back as 1990, as well as the bill of sale from when the vendor purchased the car in 2007.

Car to return to auction 7/23

Auction description:

This is a well-maintained example of a perennially popular classic British sporting saloon – in fact, many would consider this to be THE classic British sporting saloon. Finished in a cheery Carmine Red, the interior is every single one of your MKII fantasies made real.

Carmine Red is a great colour for the Jaguar MKII, evoking the optimism of the Swinging Sixties on that classic canvas.

It’s not a bad canvas either, especially as you walk up to it. The panel fit is decent and the sheet work is largely free of ripples and other damage.

The paint itself has a good shine to it.

The 15-inch chromed wire wheels are also in a decent condition. Retained by the famous Jaguar eared spinners, they fitted with newish Blockley tyres on the front axle and Sprint ST on the rear.

The rest of the chromework is good, with a healthy lustre and, like the wheels, only light pitting here and there.

Other work for you to do is a bit more pressing: there is some bubbling, most notably on the top of the offside sidelight mount, the boot lid, the sills, and the base of all four doors.

There is also some cracking paint at the base of the offside front and rear wings and some of the badges are perhaps overly patinated.

We’d describe the cabin’s overall condition as ‘lived in’ – and before you accuse us of damning with faint praise, many folk appreciate the honesty this brings, especially if they’re more interested in driving the car than showing it.

As for a more detailed appraisal, the front seats still look plump and comfortable, and while the base of the driver’s seat looks like it’s softened a little over the years, their overall condition looks good but grubby. The front seats have three-point, static Britax seatbelts fitted.

The rear seat looks even better, with still firm springing and a lovely light patina to the leather covering.

The door cards, carpets, and headlining are all a little grubby but otherwise in good shape.

The wooden veneer on the dashboard and front doors is decent, and is free of the damage we see too frequently on cars of this age. It’s also got a nice gloss although we do note the lacquer is cracked in places.

The veneer on both rear doors is less impressive and it really needs stripping down and refinishing or replacing.

The vast steering wheel, thin-rimmed and lovely in the hand, looks terrific, doesn’t it? True, there is some light damage to the rim, it looks to be cosmetic rather than structural, so this could be dealt with at your leisure if it bothers you.

The interior chromework is smart but is lightly pitted, and a Blaupunkt Vancouver headunit sits in the centre console.

The engine is nicely presented. Sure, there’s some dust on it but it’s been nicely detailed and some care has gone into its presentation.

This isn’t a surprise because the car’s record includes plenty of recent invoices for various bits including a front suspension kit and new dampers, rear dampers and bushes, steering ball joints, a clutch kit, and a cooling fan upgrade kit.

There are also many, many engine parts on the invoices too, thanks to an in-house engine rebuild by the previous owner. We are told his ownership of a classic car club involved him using the Jaguar to guide tours around Europe, so it’s no surprise he did all he could to ensure it was reliable as he possibly could possibly make it.

We are told it runs well and the seller says he has “total confidence in it.”

Spam prevention question (must be answered):
The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
