The owner of this Mk2 discovered it languishing abandoned in a lock up garage in 2009 where it had been for some years, so had it trailered home where he embarked on a comprehensive restoration. It was stripped to a bare shell in his garage, and the various parts sent away for repair, rebuild or refurbishment by appropriate specialists. The body was dipped and thousands of pounds worth of new panels were let in to the shell, which was then painted and returned, meanwhile the engine had been rebuilt, as had the gearbox, back axle, steering and suspension which were all re-assembled into the car we now see today. It has become a great every-day usable classic which has done 2500 miles since restoration, but the owner feels this isn’t enough use for a car like this and so is parting with it so it can be enjoyed. It’s finished in Opalescent Silver Grey too, with a classic red leather and walnut interior.

On the Outside

The paint and bodywork were done by renown restoration bodyshop Spectrum Paint Newington, Kent where it was painted in the original Opalescent Silver grey having had new wings and other panels costing several thousand pounds welded in, and been rust proofed. It remains in superb condition with no dings or marks and barely a stone chip to be found. New chrome finish wire wheels were fitted, which are in excellent shape and the tyres have deep tread all round.

Much of the brightwork was replaced so is smooth and bright with excellent finish.

On the Inside

Before refitting the interior, new sound deadening was added to the shell before new headlining and new carpets were installed. The wood trim was stripped and revarnished and the front seats reupholstered, so look excellent, and feature the fold down wooden tables in the seat backs. The original rear bench was cleaned and refitted. The door cards are in excellent shape and the dashboard switches and dials all look great. A modern radio was added and seat belts fitted all round.

Underneath

Mechanically this is almost a new car as every system has been stripped and rebuilt. The engine was rebuilt by Thanet Engine Centre, the manual gear box with overdrive, back axle and steering were all professionally rebuilt and electric power steering added to make manoeuvring easier.

It now has electronic ignition hidden in the distributor for more reliable running and Evans Waterless coolant in the radiator.

History Highlights

Little is know of the car prior to 2009, although it comes with a Jaguar Heritage certificate showing it has the correct numbers and trim and was built in the 24th of June, 1964, sold by W.T. Richards in Bexleyheath and first belonged to a coupon called E.T. Benham Ltd in Gillingham, Kent, close to where it remains to this day.

Over the couple of years following 2009 it was stripped to a bare shell for restoration and there is a tall stack of receipts for parts and work done as no part of the car was left untouched. There are photos on file of the restoration, do have a look at the gallery below for your perusal.

The car also comes with its period Service Manual.

Spam prevention question (must be answered):
The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
