Auction description:

1963 Jaguar MK2

Colour Blue

Odometer 38,610 Miles

Engine size 3,442cc

Location London

Country United Kingdom

Manual with Overdrive

£3,500 worth of invoices

Quality restoration

Excellent interior

Proven mechanical maintenance

The Exterior

Excellent chrome and trim

A new take on a classic Mk2 colour

Solid bodywork

The structure is solid, with prescribed areas around the floorpan reflecting the age of the car, but the engine and suspension mounts appear to be in good shape. The inner wings and the engine bay appear to be solid. The chassis rails are generally good with the front areas showing a little more in terms of age but the boot floor is looking very positive. The nearside outer sill is tatty but should have been resolved by the time the car is handed over to the new owner. The exterior is generally in good shape, with typical signs of age noted on the lower sections of the nearside front door.

The passenger doors open and close with reassuring ease, suggesting that their alignment is of a good standard, all the door wells appear to be solid. The rest of the body panels are good and well mounted, with some blemishes noted on the inner lips of the front arches and rear of the lowest edge of the off-side wing.

The front wings show light paint blisters forming on their upper and front faces. There are some minor paint application flaws spotted elsewhere, with the odd run noted on the boot lid and slight orange peel effect on the roof, but overall the paint finish is consistent in colour. The lustre and paint applications are positive and offer a decent shine.

The wire wheels are in presentable condition, with no obvious signs of damaged spokes or excessive age. The tyres are all over 20 years old and although only flagged up as MOT advisories, they would certainly be ideal candidates for replacement.

The glass is in good shape, with no chips or significant scratches, and the rubber seals appear to be up to the job, although the rear window seal shows more signs of age than the others. The chrome work is in good condition, with the bumpers, side trim and light fittings all looking very presentable and only the rear window chrome showing pitting but is still largely intact. All the lights and lenses are good, with no real signs of age or wear.

The Interior

Professionally recoloured interior

Beautifully presented

Upgraded stereo

The burr walnut dashboard is very inviting and complements the overall well-kept condition of the lavish cabin. The centre console and facia are in good condition, with just minor signs of age in places, but it is clear that the dashboard has seen attention at some point. The dials and switches are decent and are said to be functional. All instruments are legible with good bezels.

The steering wheel looks to be the original piece; it has some light wear and the occasional imperfection but is still highly usable. The gear-lever is in similar condition and doesn’t distract from a pleasant driving environment. The door cards are in very good shape and appear to have been well fitted, with no damage noted to the wooden cappings. The roof lining is in excellent condition.

The front seats are good, with the expected wear noted on the cushions and squabs, the firmness of the seats is good and they are super-comfy. The rear seat is in very good shape and is fitted with rear seat belts. There are no observations of rips or damage on any of the seats. Both the front seats are fitted with picnic tables, which are both intact and functional.

The carpets show some signs of discolouration and wear in the driver's footwell but the rest, along with their mats are good and should clean up nicely. All are dry. The boot is in very good shape, with no significant issues of note. The rubber mat covers a solid foundation and the car retains its full tool kit and jack.

The Mechanics

3.4-litre engine runs well

Manual with Overdrive

Evidence of carb-rebuild

The 3.4-litre engine runs well, ticking over with no problems. There are no rattles coming from the engine and no noticeable issues in terms of smoke or leaks. It starts and drives well, but may need some investigation into the suspension bushes which have been flagged as advisories. The owner has said it cruises nicely and is said to stop without any issues.

The gearbox and overdrive engage smoothly, however it can suffer from intermittently jumping out of first gear on occasion. The clutch has a good biting point. The power steering is said to deal with the road well, with no significant issues in terms of function.

The engine is well presented and its components suggest a positive schedule of maintenance. The wiring, hoses and pipework look good. Mechanically, the car has seen a handful of upgrades, including an electric cooling fan. The exhaust is in very good condition.

The History and Paperwork

Matching numbers

Believed to have been restored around 15 years ago

Mechanically well-maintained

MOT to June 2023

This 1963 car, which was originally painted white, comes a sizeable number of receipts indicating that over £3,500 was spent on parts and repairs between the late 2000s and the early 2010s. These receipts, along with a number of insurance evaluation photos, imply that the car was well looked after around this time, and resided in the Essex region, before being sold to a Hampshire owner. Some of their bigger invoices include a carburettor rebuild, a new brake servo, new door cards and seat foam as well as regular upkeep and maintenance items.

Previously, the car is believed to have been owned by a university lecturer in the Oxford area, who seems to have covered very few miles during his ownership, but often trusted the car to a local mechanic who has done a positive job in keeping it mechanically robust. The V5 has been applied for and the vendor expects it to be with the car in time for the sale.

Despite the car being over 40 years old and classed as a historic vehicle, the car has still been recently MOT recently for good measure. The car comes with a service manual and spare parts catalogue as well as it's V5 , which it must be noted, is locked away in the vendors house who does not return and will not be able to provide it do the new owner until he returns from holiday in the first week of September. The rest of the paperwork is already in the car and ready to go.

Spam prevention question (must be answered):
The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
