Car was at auction 10/17
www.brightwells.com/classic-motoring/general-information/classic-vintage-past-re ...

Auction description:
Lot number 26
Sale Price £26,000
Make & Model Jaguar MkII 3.8 Auto
Registration VJA 599
Year 1961
Colour Old English White
Engine Size 3,781 cc
Chassis No. P206463BU
Engine No. LB6995.8
Old style logbook; Heritage Certificate; photos of restoration; lots of bills

According to the accompanying Heritage Certificate, this 3.8 left the Browns Lane production line in mid-September 1961. It had been ordered through Henlys in Manchester and was originally silver grey with red upholstery and fitted with an automatic box.

It retains its original components, so is a fully matching numbers example and has had three registered keepers since 1978 according to the old-style V5. The registration number VJA 599 is still on the DVLA computer, although since completion, the vendor, mainly through ill health, has never got around to taxing it and getting a new V5C although it has done a few miles to the MOT station wearing trade-plates.

He purchased it many years ago as a project and stripped it to its bare shell. This was sent away to be chemically stripped and dipped to get rid of all the paint, rust and filler. This revealed a pretty good shell (that doesn't happen often), requiring only replacement of the 'crows-feet', repairs to the lower edges of the doors, a new front cross-member and that was about it.

The front subframe and limited-slip diff rear axle were then rebuilt and the car returned to a rolling shell, which was by then fully painted in top coat before it was placed in dry storage for a few years while other jobs got in the way.

There are masses of bills on file, the main one from Riverside Classic Car Centre who undertook the body restoration. This totals £16,500 alone and a further invoice for nearly £10,000 from Beales of Bath details the work they did to fully rebuild the engine and gearbox which was delivered back in October 2015.

During the final stages of completion, it was decided to update the car with an electric power steering pump and rack, an alternator conversion and new stainless-steel wire wheels which suit the car a treat. There are eight old MOTs on file and numerous photos showing the depth and quality of the restoration.

The detailing under the bonnet is excellent, as is the interior which has its dashboard beautifully veneered. It had not started for a few months when we visited for the photographs, the car firing up immediately and settling down to a steady idle just moments after the automatic chokes had switched themselves off.

Needing nothing but careful running in, it is MOTd until January 2018 and is a fine example of the breed.
