Lot #223895
This 1961 Jaguar Mk IX was manufactured in March 1960 and was later purchased new by a resident of Hillsborough, California. In 2004, it was acquired out of California’s Bay Area by the late owner, and in 2012–2013, the car was refurbished by Olde York Classics of York, Pennsylvania, at a cost of more than $80,000. In July 2017 at the Carolina Jaguar Club concours event, the vehicle received the Peoples’ Choice award, and it also earned overall first-place honors in the D5 Driven Division for the 2017 Jaguar Clubs of North America season, among other awards. Finished in two-tone green over tan leather, the sedan is powered by a 3.8-liter inline-six linked with a rebuilt Turbo-Hydramatic 250 three-speed automatic transmission. Equipment includes twin SU carburetors, servo-assisted disc brakes, power steering, body-color 16″ steel wheels, bright hubcaps and trim rings, whitewall tires, rear-wheel spats, driving lights, an updated radiator and cooling fan, electronic ignition, a sunroof, air conditioning, wood interior trim, front and rear seatbelts, and rear-seat tray tables. This Mk IX is now offered on dealer consignment on behalf of the late owner’s family with a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate, refurbishment photos, service records, a tool kit, awards and trophies, and an Illinois title.
This car is one of 10,009 Mk IX examples produced during the three-year production run. It was finished from the factory in British Racing Green, and the vehicle was stripped, repaired, and repainted during the aforementioned refurbishment in British Racing Green on the upper portions and Sherwood Green on the lower body, according to the seller. The driver-side rear door was patched and repaired in 2017. Exterior equipment includes Lucas driving lights, a manually operated sunroof, fender-mounted side mirrors, rear-wheel spats, and chrome bumpers with overriders. The locks for the two fuel-filler doors are said to be loose.
Body-color 16″ steel wheels feature bright hubcaps and trim rings and are mounted with 235/70 American Classic whitewall tires. Braking is provided by servo-assisted discs at each corner.
The cabin houses front and rear bench seats that have been reupholstered in tan leather. Aftermarket dash-mounted air conditioning has been added, and other interior appointments include wood trim, a dash-mounted rearview mirror, door-panel pockets, a passenger-side grab handle, and fold-down center armrests. The seller states that the wood trim was not replaced during the refurbishment.
The four-spoke steering wheel fronts a walnut veneer dashboard with centrally mounted Smiths instrumentation consisting of a 6k-rpm tachometer with an inset clock as well as a 120-mph speedometer and auxiliary gauges for amperage, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows 35k miles. The seller notes that the dash-mounted turn-signal indicator lights do not illuminate.
Rear occupants are provided with seatback tray tables, a clock, seatbelts, and courtesy lighting.
The 3.8-liter inline-six was factory equipped with two SU carburetors and was rated at 220 horsepower and 237 lb-ft of torque when new. The seller states that the radiator and its cooling fan have been upgraded, and electronic ignition has been installed. An Optima battery is located in the trunk compartment.
Power is routed to the rear wheels through a General Motors–sourced Turbo-Hydramatic 250 three-speed automatic transmission that was installed under prior ownership and has been rebuilt. The overdrive switch on the dashboard has been modified to actuate the manual choke instead of an overdrive unit. Oil leaks are noted.
An assortment of refurbishment and service records will accompany the vehicle.
Trophies and awards from the 2010s also are included in the sale.
The Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate lists the factory colors, identification numbers, and a build date of March 25, 1960, along with distribution via New York to the first owner in California.
The car’s chassis number is 792719BW, whereas the Illinois title prepends that sequence with “J61”, citing J61792719BW as the VIN.
