This 1948 Jaguar Mark IV is a non-running, left-hand-drive Drophead Coupé that underwent a refurbishment before it was purchased by the current owner in 2010. The car is said to have been displayed at a La Jolla Concours d’Elegance before it was placed into storage for a number of years. It is finished in burgundy with black fenders over black leather upholstery, and it retains a 3.5-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission. Equipment includes twin SU carburetors, mechanically actuated four-wheel drum brakes, 18″ painted wire wheels, a black soft top with landau bars, fog lamps, rear-hinged doors, trafficators, front bucket seats, and wood interior trim. It is unknown when the car was last serviced, and the selling dealer notes rips in the soft top as well as cracks in the tires and coolant hoses. Service of the brakes and fuel system will be required prior to use. This Mark IV DHC is now offered on dealer consignment with a clean California title.
The 3.5-liter model was initially produced by SS Cars between 1938 and 1940 before being reintroduced after the company’s name change to Jaguar as part of the Mark IV range. This example’s drophead coupe bodywork is said to have been repainted in burgundy with black fenders under previous ownership, and it features Lucas tri-bar headlights, bumper-mounted fog lamps, a “leaper” radiator mascot, fender-mounted side mirrors, trafficators, and rear-hinged doors. The black soft top is fitted with landau bars, and tears in the top are visible.
Burgundy-painted wire wheels feature two-eared knock-off hubs, and they are mounted with older 5.25/5.50–18 Dunlop Gold Seal and Lincoln bias-ply tires that show cracking on the sidewalls. The suspension incorporates solid axles, semi-elliptical leaf springs, and hydraulic shock absorbers at the front and rear. The selling dealer notes that the mechanically actuated drum brakes will require service prior to use.
The left-hand-drive cabin was reupholstered under previous ownership, and it features front bucket seats and a rear bench trimmed in black pleated leather along with color-coordinated door panels and carpets. The wood dashboard features dual gloveboxes, and wood trim extends to the door panels. Cracks in the leather are visible.
The four-spoke steering wheel features hub-mounted light controls, and it sits ahead of a Smiths reverse-sweep 5k-rpm tachometer, a 120-mph speedometer, and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 78k miles. Total mileage is unknown.
The 3.5-liter inline-six features seven main bearings, overhead valves, and twin SU carburetors, and it was factory rated at 125 horsepower. Results from a recent compression test can be seen in the gallery. It is unknown when the car was last serviced, and the selling dealer notes that the coolant hoses are cracked.
The car retains a four-speed manual transmission. Undercoating has been applied, and the selling dealer notes that service of the fuel system will be required.
