Beautiful car and well restored to authenticity, judging from photos. Would be interested in additional photos of interior, engine compartment and tool tray.
Well done.

1948 JAGUAR MK IV 3-POSITION CONVERTIBLE.

Chassis #637070, Engine # SJ2804. (Stock # 3640.) 3,162 of the lovely Mark IV Jaguars were built between 1937 and 1948. Few of these beautiful cars were built as convertibles and fewer still with left-hand drive. Designed with a long swoopy body, a magnificent grill, free-standing headlamps, a fabulous 3-position convertible top with chrome landau irons, the Mark IV is actually a piece of automotive art. When fitted with the 3.5 litre, 6-cylinder engine (which our car is), the car offers highway cruising capability to match its astonishingly good looks. Our car was completed at the Jaguar Works on April 13, 1948 and dispatched to the Jaguar distributor in Los Angeles, then to the Jaguar dealer, International Motors, in Seattle, Washington. From there, the car was purchased by Sally V. Schwank who kept the car for 43 years before selling it, then with 16,306 miles, to a New Jersey man transplanted from Canada. He commissioned a ground-up restoration by RM Auto Restoration in Ontario, Canada which was completed in 1993. Following its restoration, the car was brought to Summit, NJ where it was kept in a heated garage by its second and only other owner. He drove the car @3,000 miles in the next 33 years and maintained it in near-new condition, selling the car to us in September, 2014 with a total of 19,250 miles. Finished in black with black leather, fabulous and flawless polished Fiddleback Walnut interior woodwork and a French Grey convertible top, the car has a complete original tool kit fitted to its boot lid, a Jaguar Heritage Certificate confirming all original numbers, and notebooks of documents confirming every aspect of the car's history and restoration. A truly magnificent example of a rare and desirable car—one which is both very drivable and very collectible at the same time. Recognized as a full classic by the Classic Car Club of America. 19,327 miles. $175,000.

This 1948 Jaguar Mark IV was built on April 13, 1948, and is one of a reported 376 left-hand-drive Drophead Coupes produced. It is finished in black with a French Grey three-position soft top over a black leather interior, and power comes from a numbers-matching 3.5L inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission. The car was sold new at International Motors in Seattle, Washington, and is said to have spent 43 years with the original owner before moving to New Jersey with the second owner. RM Auto Restoration of Chatham, Ontario, Canada was commissioned to restore the car in the early 1990s, and included records document nearly $87k CAD in work performed. The car returned to New Jersey following the restoration and remained with the second owner until the late owner’s purchase in 2014. This 3.5L Drophead Coupe is now offered on behalf of the late owner’s widow with a factory tool kit, records from the refurbishment, a Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate, and a transferable New York registration.

The body was refinished in black as part of a restoration that was completed in 1993. Work during the project included disassembly, metal repairs, and polysurfacing prior to the final paint and polish. The French Grey convertible top features chromed iron landau supports and can be partially rolled back to create a half-roof, or completely opened by folding the rear section. Other equipment consists of lighted trafficators located behind each door, a polished Jaguar ornament atop the radiator cap, and chrome running lamps mounted to the front bumper.

Chrome 18″ wire wheels are secured with knock-off spinners and wear BFGoodrich Silvertown tires. Front and rear solid axles ride on semi-elliptical leaf springs and lever-arm hydraulic shock absorbers at all four corners, and braking is handled by mechanical rod-actuated drums.

Trimmed in red from the factory, the interior was upholstered in black leather with matching black carpets during the restoration, and the fiddleback walnut dash panel, moldings, and door tops were refinished. Amenities include driver and passenger ash trays, glove boxes on each side, and a long-wave/medium-wave radio mounted under the dash.

A crank at the top of the dash pushes the bottom of the windshield out for increased ventilation. Smiths instrumentation consists of a 120-mph speedometer, a tachometer with an integrated clock, and gauges for fuel level, water temperature, and amperage. The five-digit odometer shows under 20k miles, a few hundred of which were added by the late owner.

The 3.5L inline-six was factory rated at 125 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. The cylinder head was removed, machined, and rebuilt in 2009 at MotorCraft Ltd. in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Additional service at that time included replacing the spark plugs and ignition wires, servicing the thermostat, and replacing the coolant.

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission.

The Jaguar Heritage Production Record Trace Certificate states that this Drophead Coupe was completed on April 13, 1948 and was sold new through International Motors in Seattle, Washington.

Photos in the gallery also show the body and engine number stampings, which match those listed on the cowl panel identification plate and the Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate.

Lot #75638

This 1948 Jaguar Mark IV Drophead Coupe is finished in black with a gray soft top over black leather upholstery, and it is powered by a 3.5-liter inline-six. The car was initially delivered to International Motors of Seattle, Washington, and was reportedly refurbished in the 1990s prior to the current owner’s acquisition on BaT in May 2020. Subsequent work involved installation of a Tremec five-speed manual transmission and an enlarged rear window. Equipment includes chrome 18″ knock-off wire wheels, Lucas headlights, driving lights, and aftermarket rear directional lights. This Mark IV Drophead Coupe is offered by the seller on behalf of the current owner with the removed transmission, a tool kit, refurbishment and service records, a Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate, and New York registration.

Said to be one of approximately 400 left-hand drive Drophead Coupes produced, this example was reportedly stripped and refinished in black following sheetmetal repairs in the early 1990s by RM Auto Restoration of Chatham, Ontario, Canada. The car left the factory with a three-position French Grey soft top, and the rear window has been enlarged during current ownership. Additional features include Lucas headlights, driving lights, a polished Jaguar ornament atop the radiator cap, dual side mirrors, lighted trafficators behind each door, aftermarket rear directional lights, and dual exhaust outlets. The seller states that the soft top can only be partially lowered due to the rear window conversion. Staining is present on the top upholstery, and paint chips and scuffs on the body are noted.

Chrome-finished 18″ knock-off wire wheels are said to have been fitted during previous ownership and are mounted with Goodrich Silvertown Cord tires. Front and rear solid axles ride on semi-elliptical leaf springs and lever-arm hydraulic shock absorbers at all four corners. Braking is handled by mechanical rod-actuated drums.

The cabin was originally trimmed in red and was reupholstered in black leather during previous ownership. Fiddleback walnut trim accents the dash, moldings, and door tops, and additional appointments include driver and passenger ash trays, dash vents, two glove compartments, hand-crank side windows, and a long-wave/medium-wave radio mounted beneath the dash, the latter of which is non-functional.

A four-spoke steering wheel features centrally-mounted lighting controls and fronts Smiths instrumentation that includes a 120-mph speedometer, a tachometer with an inset analog clock, and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer indicates under 20k miles, less than 100 of which have been added by the current owner. True mileage is unknown.

The 3.5L-inline-six was factory rated at 125 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque and is said to have been overhauled in 2009 under prior ownership. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Tremec five-speed manual transmission that was installed under current ownership by Horsepower Motorworks of Victor, New York. The removed transmission accompanies the car.

Corrosion is noted on underside surfaces.

The Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate details factory colors as well as the chassis, engine, and body serial numbers.

The New York registration card lists the engine number shown above, SL2804, as the VIN. The car does not have a title, as it is registered in a state that does not issue titles for a vehicle of its age. It is being sold on its registration.
