Six-speed manual transmission

Comprehensively restored by Charles Russell Classic Cars LLP in collaboration with Lloyd Specialist Developments

Original interior: correct seats, Smiths instruments, and Webasto sunroof retained

Conceived and built by Charles Russell Classic Cars LLP in 2015, this car's specialist conversion includes fitting a 4.2-litre Supercharged Jaguar AJ V8 engine producing 400 bhp. A modern six-speed manual transmission provides an engaging driving experience compared to the automatic boxes often found in such conversions.

Finished in Old English White with an Oxblood leather interior, this MK2 presents a balance of originality and enhancement. Unlike some conversions that completely modernise the interior, this example retains its original interior, Smiths instruments and Webasto sunroof, thus preserving the classic character while delivering strong performance.

History and Paperwork

Built in 2015 by Charles Russell Classic Cars LLP

Has participated in classic track days and completed a tour of Ireland

Currently taxed.

Photographic build record included in the gallery below

75,402 miles indicated but done probably less than 5000 miles in current form.

The Condition

Finished in Old English White with an Oxblood leather interior

Original Webasto sunroof retained

Chassis was completely shot blasted to bare metal and appropriately primed

Front end engineered to accommodate the larger engine and improved suspension

Original interior and Smiths instruments preserved

Competition wire wheels fitted

Presents in very good order while remaining usable

Subtle modifications maintain the classic MK2 appearance

The vendor says:

"Whilst not Concours, it presents beautifully - but is not so perfect that it cannot be used and enjoyed. The chassis was completely shot blasted to bare metal and appropriately primed, with the front end engineered to take the bigger engine and improved suspension."

The Mechanics

4.2-litre 400 bhp Supercharged Jaguar AJ V8 engine from Tom Lenthall

Six-speed manual transmission

Limited-slip differential

Coopercraft brakes

Front end re-engineered to accommodate the larger engine

Improved suspension system

The vendor states the car is extremely well-mannered despite its performance

Easily capable of keeping pace with modern performance cars

The vendor says:

"Save for a few subtle cues, it looks like a standard MK2. It is a wolf in sheep’s clothing, however, and able to keep up with the quickest cars on the road. Lethal at a classic track day, it is extremely well-mannered and could also be a daily driver. It recently completed a tour of Ireland in the company of a brace of performance and supercars and commanded much admiration and respect. My son and I have enjoyed showing and demonstrating this car over the years. It presents beautifully, but is not so perfect that it cannot be used and enjoyed."

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
